THE LAST WORD

The art form of the 1990's is death. Death has its roots in the distant past, but to become a true form of art it required the communications technology and the moral outlook that have not been available until recently. Television, especially the so-called news program, has been the medium for this art form. Death by word of mouth or by newspaper has never had the immediacy that is now available through the wonders of television. Whether it is suicide, accidental death, “natural” death, war, or murder, death is bigger than ever. Where death is not available, the threat of death will sometimes do (Salmam Rushdie, for instance). The biggest political arguments of the 90's are capital punishment, abortion, drugs, and AIDS (or, after putting on your naked lunch goggles: death, death, death, and death).

Keep watching the news and make your own list. But don’t send it to us. We’re sick of it.
